Helmets - Bicycle and Other
By Dr. Brown
Helmets can reduce the risk of injury to your child. Helmets are designed specifically for various activities, although some made for one activity may be used for another. Helmets should not be "overused" - don't assume that your child should always wear a helmet. For example, the chin strap can get caught while climbing trees or on certain playground equipment, presenting more of a hazard! (Who would have thought?)
You should check to see if the helmet you purchase is the correct one for that activity and that it has met certain standards. The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute has a very nice website that also discusses bike carriers, seats, etc.
